Healthy Barbecue Recipes For The Weight Conscious

Part of keeping one’s self healthy is eating the right kinds of food without compromising good nutrition. We all know that eating junk food and fast food is bad for the health. These types of diet won’t only make you gain weight but also increase your cholesterol levels. So when we say proper or good nutrition, we actually refer to the intake of all the food in the pyramid moderate amounts. This also goes without saying that eating greasy food items or those that are cooked in fat (as in deep-frying) such as fries, fried chicken and hamburgers isn’t recommended. You might ask, “So how can we eat chicken or potatoes if we won’t fry it?” Well, there are a lot of other cooking methods and styles that you can opt for. For instance, why not enjoy barbecues?

Barbecuing is not only a popular cooking method but it is also considered a part of our culture. It involves the cooking of food in its own juices over low heat. Nowadays, there are charcoal and gas grills available in the market that we can use for barbecues.

Anyway, if you are looking for healthy barbecue recipes, you won’t have to search far anymore. Let me share two suggestions that you’ll really love!

  1. Grilled Salmon Burgers

Grilled-Salmon-BurgerInstead of red meat, why not grill salmon for your sandwich? Get a quarter pound of salmon and put it in a food processor. Add some mustard and rind then process the ingredients until smooth. Add ¾ pound of salmon into the mixture and pulse it until the salmon is chopped. Add some shallots, tarragon, salt and pepper. Make patties and grill for about two minutes on each side.

  1. Grilled Chicken Breast

Grilled-Chicken-BreastGet a bowl and combine sugar, honey, olive oil, garlic, basil, saffron, thyme, basil, cayenne pepper, oregano, salt, sage and parsley. Stir the ingredients thoroughly and then pour this marinade onto your boneless chicken breasts. Let the meat stay soaked in the marinade for at least 20 minutes. Grill for about 10 minutes per side.

I hope that you loved these two grilled dishes I shared. If you are looking for more recipes, just watch this video:

Healthy Lifestyle Tips – 10 Tips to Get Better Sleep

healthy-lifestyle-tipsIf you’re like me, an insomniac, then you would have tried a number of alternatives to get the sleep you deserve.  After a tiring day, you take a warm bath.  You soak your stress away for the day.  You then get ready.   You then lay on your comfy, warm bed, say your night time thanks or prayers, then try to get some shut eye.  But then there’s a problem – you realize it’s already 2am and you are still wide away!  So, what should you do???

The most important tip I can give you: DON’T get hooked on prescription drugs!  Avoid sleeping pills like Valium and avoid drinking Benadryl or other pills with Diphenhydramine HCl.  You can become too dependent to these and have withdrawal symptoms after.

Okay – so here are a few NATURAL ways you can actually get better sleep.

  1. Set a sleeping schedule. You wake up at 5am, sleep at 10pm. Stick to that.  Tend to oversleep on weekends?  Set the alarm just to make you sure you don’t sleep TOO much.  That can ruin your body clock and your cycle.
  2. quit-smokingWrite things down. Keep a diary of your sleeping patterns or habits. What did you do that day that made you fall asleep faster?  What did you eat or drink that left you wide awake?  This will determine some key points you should avoid.
  3. Quit the tobacco.   Nicotine is a stimulant, so it prevents you from falling asleep, and then there’s the withdrawal symptoms.. I could go on and on.  Bottom line is, quite smoking!
  4. Check your medicines. Drinking several meds prescribed by your doctor? Ask your GP about the side effects of these.  Some can make people palpitate or nervous.
  5. Exercise, but don’t do these four hours before you sleep. Keep your body active during the day and relaxed during the night. Makes sense right?
  6. Avoid Caffeine. Oh dear… But if you really MUST, then do it before 2pm! (wink)
  7. Take some time to relax. We all need to unwind after a day’s work. We all need to relax. Talk to your family and friends, share them your woes and troubles so that you don’t end up thinking about these every night before sleeping.
  8. Drink some non-fat milk before bed. It has an amino acid called tryptophan which promotes sleep.
  9. drink-a-glass-of-milkAdd some lavender oil into your pillow or spray some in your room.  The scent will relax you and calm your nerves.
  10. Keep your room relaxing and de-cluttered.  How can you fall asleep if your room is a mess?

You can also try some HERBAL supplements to improve the quality of your sleep.  Take note: herbal.  That means, ALL NATURAL.  You can look for these online, and I’ve personally tried Nidra Herbal Supplements.  It wasn’t habit forming, I felt better and more energized.  But that’s just me.  You can try out what’s best for you :)
